Screening Tour: Giuseppe Makes A Movie

Nobody — and that means NOBODY — makes a movie like Giuseppe Andrews. The insane antics committed to produce Giuseppe’s 2007 epic Garbanzo Gas forms the basis of the documentary Giuseppe Makes a Movie, which is embarking on a North American screening tour this month. Dates and locations are below, which includes stops in Montreal; Los Angeles; Portland, OR; Austin, TX; and more.
Giuseppe Makes a Movie is directed by Adam Rifkin, who previously directed the cult hit Detroit Rock City, which co-starred Giuseppe and seemed like a terrific vehicle to launch the quirky young actor into near instant stardom.
But, Giuseppe had other ideas.
Shunning the Hollywood system, Giuseppe instead chose to work behind the camera and make movies in an incredibly unlikely location — the trailer park in which he lives with his biggest supporter, his father.
Giuseppe began churning out dozens of feature-length and short-form videos starring the residents of the trailer park, as well as the local homeless population of Ventura, California. In 2007, Rifkin followed the two-day production of Garbanzo Gas, filmed primarily in a nearby motel and features a rambling plot about a cow granted a vacation before heading to slaughter and two junkies desperate to find their next meal.
Challenges that Giuseppe faces on set that are captured in the doc include: Actors forgetting to show up; finding adequate craft services, i.e. each cast member’s favorite liquor; and one elderly actor who repeatedly soils himself.
Giuseppe Makes a Movie is both a celebration of filmmaking, as well as a celebration of life itself — about an extended family of outsiders creating art out of the part of society everyone else has turned a blind eye towards.
