Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Sarah Jacobson
289 Kent Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11211
Hosted by: Sarah Jacobson Film Grant
This special event honoring the late, great Sarah Jacobson is both a celebration of her pioneering work as a DIY filmmaker and a fundraiser for the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant, which awards money to independent women filmmakers.
There will be screenings of some of Sarah’s early short films, plus samples from winning filmmakers who were awarded the grant in previous years. There will also be short video tributes from Sarah’s fans and friends, such as Kathleen Hanna, Allison Anders, Tamra Davis, Michelle Handelman, George Kuchar, Sam Green, and Craig Baldwin. Lastly, Barbara Hammer and Sarah’s mother Ruth will introduce a screening of Sarah’s punk classic Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore.
Sarah Jacobson was a tireless advocate of DIY filmmaking, having produced, directed and self-distributed two feature films, I Was a Teenage Serial Killer and Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore. She also directed numerous music videos and was a producer for the Oxygen cable network. Tragically, Sarah passed away at the age of 32 from uterine cancer.
Sarah was — and continues to be — a beloved presence in the underground film scene. Following her untimely passing, her mother Ruth and filmmaker Sam Green set up the Sarah Jacobson Film Grant to support other young female filmmakers “whose work embodies some of the things that Sarah stood for: a fierce DIY approach to filmmaking, a radical social critique, and a thoroughly underground sensibility.” Since 2004, the grant has been awarded to eight filmmakers: Marie Losier, Natasha Mendonca, Kara Herold, Gretchen Hogue, Jo Dery, Vanessa Renwick, Ellen Lake, and Veronica Majano.
So, come celebrate the continuing spirit of Sarah’s DIY filmmaking spirit and contribute to a very worthwhile cause.
Here’s a cute musical montage clip from Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore:
