Ed Halter: What Is Film?

By Mike Everleth ⋅ September 15, 2006

Ed Halter, the former chieftan of the New York Underground Film Festival (’95-’05), is headin’ down to Austin to guest curate this year’s Cinematexas held Sept. 20-24, one of the premiere experimental film festivals in the world. As Ed puts it, this is:

a fan’s dream, not unlike Ripper Owen’s ascension to join Judas Priest’s lineup in 1996

Ed’s take on the fest sounds very interesting, too. Noticing that most “film” festivals these days are now actually almost exclusively video, he’s showcasing artists who use physical film stock and the tools of film to create unique performance events. These artists will include Luther Price, William E. Jones, Bruce McClure, Eddo Stern and more.

Ed’s mission statement was at the Cinematexas site. Also, there was a nice interview with Ed in the Austin Chronicle. Sounds like fun. And congrats to Ed.
