2014 Lausanne Underground Film Festival: Official Lineup

By Mike Everleth ⋅ October 10, 2014

Grid of 15 movie stills from films screening at the Lausanne Underground Film Festival

It’s lucky 13 — as in 13th annual edition — for Switzerland’s Lausanne Underground Film Festival, an epic celebration of cinematic weirdness, violence, filth and everything else that makes life worth living. The wild debauchery runs October 15-19.

The fest opens on Oct. 15 with the feature film debut by Leah Meyerhoff, I Believe in Unicorns, which tells the story of a troubled teenage girl who runs away with an aggressive older boy.

Other new films include the misanthropic comedy Buzzard by Joel Potrykus; the deep woods psychological thriller Mother Nature by Johan Liedgren; the complex Japanese drama Kept by Maki Mizui; and more.

LUFF this year is really stuffed with great retrospectives beginning with a tribute to Beth B, who has been churning out controversial, thought-provoking flicks since the New York No Wave era to know. There will be screenings of her classic films, such as The Offenders and Salvation!, and her latest documentary, Exposed.

There is also a retrospective of the work of the lord of the bizarre, Trent Harris. There will, of course, be a screening of one of the greatest underground films of all time, The Beaver Trilogy; plus, other oddities such as Rubin & Ed, Plan 10 From Outer Space and more.

In addition to retrospectives of other outre filmmakers like Jean-Denis Bonan and Shane Ryan, there will be focuses on aggressive genre distributor Wild Eye Releasing and the outrageous international screening series Cinema Bis.

There are also some great documentaries on underground culture, such as The Death and Resurrection Show, which is Shaun Pettigrew’s profile of the pioneering industrial band Killing Joke; Style Wars 2, a graffiti doc by Amos Angeles; and a look at the synthesizer, Robert Fantinatto’s I Dream of Wires.

And, on Oct. 18, there will be a special live cinema performance of the work of hand-painting specialist animator Martha Colburn accompanied by the music of Vincent Hanni, of Young Gods.

Below is the full film lineup of this year’s Lausanne Underground Film Festival. But, please check out the fest’s official site for way more info.
