Yikes! I haven’t seen a film festival this dense since, well, Melbourne this week. But this year’s Lausanne Underground Film Festival, which will run Oct. 15-19, is jam packed to the gills with underground goodness. Adding a couple new theaters on which to screen has greatly expanded the festival. It seems like there’s more movies and more screening opportunities per film. Some of these films are screening so often you can consider them as having a theatrical run.

LUFF is, as always, an awesome mix of terrific classic films, great retrospectives and modern masterpieces. Particularly exciting — from an Underground Film Journal perspective — are retrospectives of the “Beat Cinema” movement of the ’60s, which includes films by Jonas Mekas, Ron Rice, Robert Frank, John Cassavetes, William S. Burroughs and more; and a two-night program of the work of Richard Kern, who will be in attendance. Plus, there’s retrospectives of the work of Japanese filmmakers Kiyotaka Tsurisaki and Shuji Terayama; a “Music in Film” series; a tribute to Albert Hoffman and the usual short films, documentaries and features in competition and more!

Lastly, before we get to the full lineup, here are some special Underground Film Journal shout-outs. (You can click on the film titles for my reviews of these fine, terrific films.) First, Craig Baldwin‘s beautifully dense and wonderful Mock Up on Mu continues its world tour with a stop at LUFF. And it’s been paired up with Mike Davis‘s Sex Galaxy, a hilarious descent into retrograde horniness. Then, in the “Short Films: Fiction” collection, be sure to catch Brian Lonano‘s brutal and hysterical Attackazoids! Plus, take a crazy train ride across America in Alison Murray’s fine Train on the Brain; and a blast from the past, Frank Pavich’s N.Y.H.C., which I saw years ago at the New York Underground.

Finally, and very excitingly, Pierre-Luc Vaillancourt continues to terrorize the world stage with another collection of fantastic transgressive short films from Cinema Abattoir. They are being shown under the collective name “Heretics: Iconoclastic Quebec Cinemas.” Abattoir and LUFF is a marriage made in Heaven as far as I’m concerned.
