Short Film: Hank’s Auto Repair
(NOTE: Short film no longer available online, but you can watch the trailer above.)
No automobiles are actually repaired in Matthew Stawski’s fun short film Hank’s Auto Repair. But, a lot of blood is spewed, even more profanities are unleashed and an artificial leg is deployed as a weapon of mass destruction.I originally reviewed the film on the Underground Film Journal a few years ago, was very enamored of it, so I’m glad Stawski recently uploaded the full film online for everyone to enjoy. The film has a nice surreal bent to it and a very distinctive visual look, from the quirky camera moves and angles to the great costuming. Also, the pop tunes sprinkled throughout really add to the film’s cheerfully brutal ambiance.
With his distinctive visual flair and use of music, it’s no wonder Stawski has gone on to direct several music videos, which can be seen on Vimeo. He’s also working on a short animated musical called A Neighborhood Song.
