George Kuchar
George Kuchar began his filmmaking career in the early 1950s by making short, humorous homages to Hollywood melodramas and sci-fi flicks with his twin brother Mike when both were just teenagers growing up in the Bronx, New York. After collaborating together for several years, the brothers split up to make films individually, even though they would still continue to contribute to each other's films.
As the Kuchars' fame grew in the NYC avant-garde film world, George was eventually offered a teaching position at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early '70s. On the West Coast, he would make several short films a year using his students as cast and crew; plus, he regularly made short diary documentaries, particularly about his trips to the midwest to chase big storms.
George Kuchar's legacy on the avant-garde and mainstream film worlds is incalculable, nor is it known exactly how many films he actually made since nobody has ever kept track of his prodigious output over the years. The filmography below -- and pretty much all filmographies -- will be incomplete.
George passed away on Sept. 6, 2011. He is survived by his brother Mike.
