Short Film: Walt Disney’s Taxi Driver

By Mike Everleth ⋅ May 1, 2012

We’ll now make it public. The Underground Film Journal’s all-time favorite scene in cinematic history is the ill-fated porno movie date scene with Robert DeNiro and Cybill Shepherd in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. The sheer uncomfortableness of Travis Bickle’s cluelessness and Betsy trying to be a good sport make for a supremely icky good time. So, we were tickled pink when master media mixologist Bryan Boyce reconfigured that scene — and more — to include multiple beloved and iconic cartoon figures in his brilliant Walt Disney’s Taxi Driver.

While substituting Steamboat Willie for the adult film during the date scene makes for a funny gag, Walt Disney’s Taxi Driver really takes off in the subsequent sequence where Boyce brilliantly matches up Bickle’s interior monologue with several Disney characters wandering the gritty New York City streets. There’s also several other nice touches, including Bickle wearing Mickey Mouse ears during Taxi Driver‘s most famous scene and a great concluding bit with Tinkerbell. Genius.
