Short Film: Lazer Ghosts 2: Return To Laser Cove

By Mike Everleth ⋅ April 18, 2011

Albert Einstein is back from the dead … again … and this time he’s really pissed off!

You know how trailers usually spoil movies giving away the entire plot? For Steven Kostanski‘s brilliant and hilarious Lazer Ghosts 2: Return to Laser Cove, the entire movie is the trailer. This is a spot-on spoof of all those dreadful, zero-budget direct-to-video sci-fi/horror flicks that used to litter video store shelves. In it, a nerdy teenager teams up with a helpful ghost, a gruff police detective and a sexy scientist to once again defeat Einstein and his army of laser-wielding ghosts. Lazer Ghosts 2 will make you wish the feature version of it actually exists.

Lazer Ghosts 2 hits all the right notes from the overall cheeseball concept of laser ghosts to ripping off lines of dialogue and concepts from other, better sci-fi films, like The Terminator and Ghostbusters. Personally, this short film really brought me back to my days working in video stores in the early ’90s when there was one or two new Full Moon Entertainment movies hitting the shelves every week, with every other one starring Tim Thomerson. Actually, while FME head honcho Charles Band is still cranking ’em out, part of me is sad that direct-to-video era is gone.

Kostanski has also directed the grotesque and surreal horror short film Heart of Karl, which you can watch and download online here, and is one of the five members of the filmmaking group Astron-6 that specializes in gonzo genre films, such as Inferno of the Dead, Insanophenia, GoreBlade and more.
