This is just a quickie post to direct your attention to two new image galleries for two oldĀ Underground Film Journal favorites, both of which happen to be documentary portraits of some very quirky people living on the fringe of American society.

First up is Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea. Directed by Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer and narrated by John Waters, Plagues and Pleasures gets to know an extremely eccentric cast of characters who live by a giant man-made salty lake that regularly spews up dead fish. Check out a few of the residents who call this godforsaken place home — as well as a mound of rotting tilapia.

Next we have Random Lunacy: Videos From the Road Less Traveled, the documentary by Victor Zimet and Stephanie Silber that compiles years of footage of Poppa Neutrino and his brood. Neutrino has never called one spot “home” and has spent his entire life roaming the globe — and for many years with his wife and children in tow who had to literally sing and dance for their supper. Zimet and Silber are currently touring the American south with their film. Catch it if you can!

Below are sample images. Click each image to embiggen and navigate the individual galleries:
