Garrett Scott Memorial: NYC, April 24

By Mike Everleth ⋅ April 20, 2006

Portrait of Garrett Scott

From IndieWire:

There will be a special memorial held for documentary film director Garrett Scott on Monday, April 24 at the IFC Center (323 Sixth Ave.). The program will run from 7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. and will include clips from Garrett’s films Occupation: Dreamland and Cul de Sac. Appearing will be Garrett’s co-director Ian Olds and documentary filmmaker Jem Cohen (they all had a screening together at the 2002 New York Underground Film Festival).

Garrett passed away suddenly on March 4, 2006. I wrote a little about Garrett here and I’ll repeat that this was a tragic loss for the independent film community. If I were in New York, I’d be going.

I was a big fan of Garrett and Ian’s films. Occupation: Dreamland is available on DVD (buy it here) and it’s one of the best war documentaries I’ve ever seen, an up close and personal account of soldiers in Iraq. Highly recommended. Cul de Sac has been showing on the Sundance Channel lately. If you get the channel, make sure you catch the film. It’s brilliant. If you click either of the film titles in this post, you’ll go to my reviews of the films.
