2011 Boston Underground Film Festival: Official Lineup

It’s lucky 13 for the Boston Underground Film Festival as they celebrate their raucous 13th annual edition this year. Opening with the much buzzed about bloody feature film Hobo With a Shotgun starring Rutger Hauer and directed by Jason Eisener, the fest then barrels on for eight wild nights and days from March 24-31.
While there’s plenty of underground goodness from the U.S.A., this year BUFF feels like it’s a much more international affair with several sick features from around the globe. There’s gory horror and quirky black comedy from Japan in the guise of Yoshihiro Nishimura’s Helldriver and Sion Sono’s Cold Fish; the Argentinian freak-out Phase 7 by Nicolas Goldbart; David Blyth’s Wound is a psychological thriller from New Zealand; and Mark Hartley’s Machete Maidens Unleashed! is a look at Philippine exploitation cinema from the ’70s.
Stateside there’s Usama Alshaibi‘s Profane, about a Muslim sex worker’s spiritual crisis, which the Underground Film Journal has seen and loved. Plus, there’s retro sci-fi goodness with Richard Griffin’s Atomic Brain Invasion, James Felix McKenney’s pseudo Christian scare flick Satan Hates You, the crushing horror of The Corridor and A Horrible Way to Die and more.
Plus, there Lucky McKee’s adaptation of Jack Ketchum’s The Woman, which practically caused a riot by angry audience members back in January at the Sundance Film Festival.
On the short film front, the fest really belongs to the infamous Robot Hand crew, which is having an unofficial mini-retrospective of films by Kevin and Brian Lonano starting with the BUFF-commissioned trailer Bacchus Attack Us, plus 8bit Ghost Hop, Carny and Martian Precursor.
Also be on the lookout for the awesome nunsploitation short film Thy Kill Be Done by Gregory Hanson & Casey Regan, as well as the terrifically creepy horror short Beating Hearts by Matthew Garrett. There’s also several other Underground Film Journal favorite directors lurking about in the short film compilations, such as Neil Ira Needleman, Carey Burtt, Steve Cossman, Jamie Heinrich, Eric Krasner, Michael Robinson and more.
Once again, BUFF is putting on a spectacular, blow-out event. The full lineup of films is below, but for more info, please visit the festival’s official website.
