The fourth annual Mono No Aware expanded cinema festival is now accepting proposals for screening projects. The festival this year will be held on Nov. 28 in Brooklyn, NY.

Final deadline:
Nov. 5

The term “expanded cinema” doesn’t get bandied around too much these days, so for those who are unfamiliar with it, it means a film screening that also incorporates a live element.

That means that your submission must include actual film — no video! — and that a live performance of some sort has to be incorporated into your screening, whether it’s a live score or foley work, or some sort of art installation that runs concurrently with the screening film.

Plus, your screening should be structured somehow to highlight that it will be a once-in-a-lifetime event, one that will be peformed this one time and not to be recreated ever again. Furthermore, there will be no videotaping of the screenings to emphasize the ephemeral quality of the overall festival.

For details on how to submit and to read about what they’ve accepted in the past, please visit the official Mono No Aware website.
