Two U.S. Underground Films Debut At 2010 Edinburgh International Film Festival

Vacation

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark‘s The Crab and Zach Clark‘s Vacation!.

The Crab, which screens on June 21,  is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.

Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at EIFF. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in the Underground Film Journal’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on DVD — a situation that will hopefully be rectified in the near future. Hopefully, too, these second features will screen back here at home at U.S. festivals after their Edinburgh bows.

As for the rest of EIFF, it’s a massive, international affair screening both modern indie films and a couple of classic flicks by Ken Russell John Huston and others.

But, a few other U.S. films of note in the fest are: Putty Hill, the second feature film by director Matt Porterfield, which is also the Closing Night film at the 2010 Chicago Underground Film Festival; Mike McCarthy’s Cigarette Girl, which won the Director’s Choice Award at the 2009 Arizona Underground Film Festival; the Werner Herzog-directed and David Lynch-produced black comedy My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?; Steven Soderbergh’s tribute to Spaulding Grey And Everything Is Going Fine; the Joan Jett and Cherie Curie biopic The Runaways; and last but not least Pixar’s Toy Story 3.

Below is the full feature film lineup for the fest. However, please check with the official EIFF website and schedule to double check times and such.
