2008 Mono No Aware: Official Lineup

Mono No Aware

NYC’s Mono No Aware is a unique event of live film performances. It will run on Nov. 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the East Coast Aliens Salon in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

This year there will be four performances, plus an Opening Ceremony event that is still TBA. Below I am listing the four events I have info for. Normally on the Underground Film Journal I like to write up my own descriptions of films and such, but since it’s difficult to get a full sense of what these live performances are beforehand, I’m cribbing parts of descriptions from the Mono No Aware website. For more info on the performances and the artists involved to get a better sense of what you can expect to experience, I recommend going over there and checking things out. It sounds like it will be a pretty fun night.

One thing that’s interesting to me on a personal note, the East Coast Aliens Salon is actually just a couple of blocks from where I used to live in Greenpoint myself for about three years. Were I still there, I’d definitely walk over. I recommend grabbing an early dinner at one of the numerous Polish restaurants in the neighborhood before catching the evening’s entertainment. It was a nice place to live.

And lastly before I post the lineup, I was curious where the name “Mono No Aware” came from. Apparently, it’s a Japanese term that can be translated into “a sensitivity of ephemera,” meaning an appreciation of the bittersweet passing of things or events. Here’s the lineup:

Prenotions in Red, White, and Blues
16mm & Super8 mm / Live Sound
Organized by Fern Silva / Doron Sadja

The geo-political rise and fall of a future American hero, a vague visionary representation of the assassination of our new president. Conceptually influenced by the 8mm Zapruder film of the assassination of JFK, which made waves around the world, the importance of motion picture.

Architecture of the Sun
16mm / Live Sound
Organized by Brittany Gravely & Jennifer Pipp // Ken Linehan, Rick Prior, & Sean Andrews

A common affinity for scientific-nostalgic-hallucinatory-mystical-types of sounds, feelings, & imagery leads the way for this group. A collage of electronic-analog sounds respond to sequential images while projections are modified by hand with filters, focus & prisms in response to psychedelic sound.

Blush
Super8 mm / Live Sound
Organized by Sam Dishy

A series of moments captured in a way only Super8 knows how to do. This film is a simple and pure expression of cinema.

Mekanikdolls
16mm & Super8 mm / Live Sound & Performance
Organized by Seyhan Muaoglu & Jess Ramsay

Abandon all conventions associated with performance as the boundaries between audience & artist are blurred in a roomful of film projections, sounds, contemporary dance & audience participation.
